A Present From Japan

The good people at Q-Games sent me a "thank you" package, which traveled all the way from Kyoto Japan to be here. Needless to say, I got the "thank you" message loud and clear.

Recently, Q-Games asked me to help playtest PixelJunk Monsters. There was an issue relating to the leaderboards, and I helped them solve it.

So in return for my help, I received two awesome "original" PixelJunk Eden T-shirts. Although the shirts are crazy cool and my inner fanboy is giddy with joy - I'd gladly help out Q-Games anyday without reward.

I owe many thanks to those guys over in Japan, especially Dylan for his help in my continuous journalism endeavors. I'm the one that should be sending gifts in the mail - not them.

*Check out the sidebar for a picture of the other shirt. And yes, the above picture is purposely blurry, because blurry is the new focus. It's all the rage these days.*

My Unprofessional Rant (ruh oh)

I won't be providing a link to my movie review mentioned below. Why? Because in a weird act of weeding out the crap and alienating one of their writers - the Statesman has decided to pretend my review never existed.

I am one of three "Preemptive Critics." Every other Friday we each write a short review. However, this week you will only be seeing two of the three reviews - mine isn't listed on the Statesman website.

Needless to say, I'm pissed. And this is not the first time I've seen the Statesman do this. I'm pretty sure every "Preemptive Critics" that gets published online will only include the "best" reviews.

Fine, if all the Statesman wants to do is publish the "good stuff" online - so be it. But don't pretend like certain individuals don't exist, by excluding them without any proper notification to the reader or the writer.

On that note, here's the link to my videogame reviews.

Upcoming Reviews For 11/07/08

Here's a quick update to let you guys know about four upcoming reviews.

I've got one movie review and two game reviews for this Friday's newspaper. Additionally, I'll be reviewing Gears of War 2, which just showed up in the mail. I don't know how I'll manage to find time to review Gears, but I'll make it happen.

Also, I'm in the works of writing an exclusive feature story with Daedalic Entertainment. The story will cover the creative process behind the game, including the hand-painted backgrounds, and the Joe Hisaishi reminiscent soundtrack.

So there it is. Have a great week, and I'll post those review links on Friday.

How To Survive A Zombie Apocalypse

In the spirit of this undead holiday, I've written a column for the Statesman entitled "Students Guide To Surviving A Zombie Apocalypse." Here's a little taste:

"Weapons (duh) – The only way to kill a zombie is to decapitate the head or destroy the brain. Otherwise, they’ll just keep on coming. Which brings me to my next point: which weapons are most effective?

I don’t anticipate too many students carrying around machetes, so let’s look at two more common items. Let’s start with the textbooks: They’re heavy, over-priced, and an effective killing machine."
When I first pitched the idea of writing a zombie survival guide to the Statesman, I got a lot of confusing looks from people. But over time, my crazy idea was slowly accepted. So, a big thank you to my editor for having faith in me.

Now enjoy the column and have a Happy Halloween!

SourPK.com Milestone - 200th Post

Okay, so 200 posts isn't exactly a huge milestone. Nevertheless - it's time to celebrate.

First things first, here's my review for LittleBigPlanet. This game rocks, and I'm glad I can finally start building my very own levels. Oh and if I have time, I'd very much like to feature LBP levels in the future.

Secondly, I also reviewed Fable II. If you loved the first Fable, then you'll love the second. More or less, it's a beefed up version of the original.

So, it's the 200th post. What should I write about to commemorate this occasion? Well since this is MY blog about ME, (and videogames) how about a big ol' long boring post about my life. Wouldn't that be fun? Of course.

In the Statesman newspaper, you'll see a mugshot of me next to all of my reviews. And by that mugshot, you'll see the phrase "Gaming 101."

Fun fact, that phrase started with my first article entitled "Video Games 101." I never intended to use the phrase, but it stuck for some reason. Despite the importance and influence of that first article, it was not well received - hated actually.

In the article I made a rather ambitious claim. I said, "the majority of games played are produced by Japanese developers." As it turns out, that statement can neither conclusively be proven true or false. The data doesn't exist.

Long story short, the Statesman printed a rather angry letter to the editor. And since then I've learned to never upset a nerd, or else feel their wrath.

That's a pretty impressive track record, don't you think? On day one I was already making people angry. But as long as my writing is being read and noticed, then there's no such thing as bad publicity.

On that note, thank you sincerely for taking the time to read this blog. Let's hope the next 200 posts will be filled with funny and worthwhile content. *fingers crossed*

LittleBigPlanet = Adorable Overload

All your sackboys r belong to us.

I got my review copy of LBP today, along with Bioshock. I've already played quite a bit of LBP (naturally). And I haven't gotten to Bioshock yet (I don't have time).

Reviews for both Fable II and LBP will be available this Friday and I'll be posting the link here.

My next review will be My Japanese Coach for the Nintendo DS. So stay tuned!

I Love My Job

Check out what I got today, courtesy of Microsoft, and my awesome job - woooooooooo.

I wish I was showing you a picture of Fable 2 and LittleBigPlanet together, but Sony delayed LBP by a week and I'm not sure when my review copy arrives. Which by the way is an awfully big headache for me, because I had 500 words dedicated to LBP. So, now my work schedule is thrown off and I need to improvise a little.

Life is hard, eh?

Lifting Cars Hulk Style And Writing For A Newspaper

Jeez, it's been awhile, hasn't it? Here's my long overdue "life" post.

First off, remember when I updated this blog daily? I do. Even though I miss those good old days, my lack of time has been truly rewarding.

Secondly, I hope the new blog layout is okay. Considering my lack of time to post, I thought a simple and clean layout would work best. I mean, I'm not exactly running a news magazine here. Simple is better, right?

Now onto the good stuff.

Life at a Newspaper -
I feel incredibly thankful to have my job. And I’m in total disbelief that I get paid to do what I do, mostly because I feel like a fake journalist.

Let me explain: the newspaper has weekly meetings, and at those meetings, stories are assigned. So, while everyone else is raising their hands to claim real investigative/controversial stories, I sit idly by doing nothing. Why? Because I’ve already got my own thing going. Which is...

At least once a week I’ll write either a movie review or game review – not exactly earth shattering journalism, or even real journalism for that matter. But I have fun and love my job. So, in a nutshell, I get paid to play games and make people laugh. Very satisfying.

Lifting Cars Hulk Style - For some ungodly reason, I’ve decided to take four PE classes. You might be thinking “well that’s a waste of time.” But nothing could be further from the truth.

Since the beginning of the semester I’ve gained 10 pounds of muscle mass. Which I’m not sure if that’s a lot or normal, but I’m pretty sure my workout schedule isn’t. I run twice-weekly 5k’s, lift weights, run some more, and play badminton.

Not to state the obvious – but I’m bloody exhausted. Furthermore, at the rate I’m going, I’ll be lifting cars and smashing cans against my head in no time. “Hulk smash!”

Dating? -
PE is a great way to meet the ladies. Who knew? If I could invent a flux capacitor, I’d tell my past self to sign up for them sooner.

Seriously, I’m being asked out on dates weekly. Flattering, but we all know it’s because of my Johnny Bravo good looks. Plus it doesn’t hurt to pay them. Joking…
?

School (duh!) -
Not much to say here, other than I’m just as busy with school as ever. Dare I say, even more so? *gasp*

Cheese Tastes So Good -
Yes, cheese is still a part of my daily life. My mind is a fountain of spewing pointless cheese knowledge. And I do emphasize pointless.

Again, nothing new here, except my paycheck getting bigger. *gives the university a bear hug*

I wanted to mix things up a little, by reviewing both versions of the game. So if you're interested in some SimCity lovin, check out the link below.
SimCity Creator review

Oh and one more thing. Big changes are headed to the blog. Well, moderately big changes. (Wait, what?)I'll be celebrating the 200 post with a little taste of both LittleBigPlanet and Fable 2. Who knows, you might be getting that taste before the games are released. Hmmmm, now wouldn't that be interesting? :)

Video Games 101

In this article I explain the top five myths non-gamers should understand. It's worth a read if you're not too familiar with the gaming industry. I also wrote it as a means to promote future gaming articles in the Statesman.
